Update: January 14, 2010

Prada is doing amazing in her foster home. She has no health issues, is doing great on her housetraining and is sweet and playful. She sleeps in her crate at night and is crated during the day.

She is still a puppy and is learning to chew on appropriate things. She loves her doggie foster siblings and plays well inside and outside.

Now that Prada is stable and happy she needs a home to call her own. She is a sweet and wonderful dog. She deserves someone that will love her and care for her for life.

If you think you're ready for a puppy, ask about Prada. She is a love and ready to come home with you.

Update: 1/10/10

Ok... where to begin.

Prada is a wonderful dog - I bottle fed her from the time she was 3 weeks old until she was weaned. She lived at my house with the rest of her litter until she was 4 months old - then she moved into a kennel environment. She's been through a basic obedience course. She loves other dogs and loves to play.

BUT

Prada was adopted out on December 23rd. On the 25th, Christmas Day, I got a phone call from Prada's new adopter. The dog was having seizures and vomiting up blood. It was obvious the dog had ingested something, but the adopter swore there was no way she could have. I told the adopter she needed to get the dog to the vet IMMEDIATELY. She said she called the vet and because of the dogs breed this was probably just the first seizure of many and she would be a lifelong epileptic and not to even bother bringing her in. I told the adopter the dog NEEDED to see the vet. The adopter called back and said she took the dog in but the vet said it could cost as much as $4500 and she wasn't about to spend that on a dog she just adopted two days ago and she would bring the dog back to us tomorrow.

On December 26th she brought Prada back and I rushed her to the vet. She had a grand mal seizure while at the vets office and they sedated her and put her on IV fluids and Morphine for several hours. They ran a blood panel and sent her back home saying the results would be in tomorrow: If the seizures continues it was likely the dog was epileptic, if they stopped it was likely she ingested a poison. She had one more seizure the night of the 26th.

The 27th we were back at the vet to get her catheter removed and get the results of the blood panel - which was normal. Prada was still sedated but no longer seizing. She wasn't acting herself and I kept her at home with me to keep an eye on her.

By the 29th she was acting more like herself, except she would start whining, whimpering, and crying without a trigger and for  hours at a time. It was back to the vet. The vet said that it was possible that the seizures triggered a pain center in her brain. She may feel pain constantly and need to be on Prozac for life. We again sedated her. She slept for the next 2 days, eating normally but sleeping the rest of the time.

We held a rescue meeting deciding that her quality of life was being affected - that she wasn't a healthy or happy dog and to keep her alive and in pain was inhumane. The decision was made for euthanasia the next morning. That night, Prada seemed fine. She was off all of her medications and seemed back to her old self. She played with the other dogs, wagged her tail and socialized with one of the volunteers. We postponed the decision to see what would happen.

It's been a week now and she has had no more seizures or incidents. I am taking her back to my house tonight to see how she does in a home environment.

I really don't know where to go from here. It's obvious that she was poisoned or exposed to some unknown toxin, but I don't know what to do or how long to wait to make sure there are no lifelong repercussions. At this point I'm just going to tae Prada home with me and my dogs and hope an adopter sees what a wonderful dog she is. I hope the next people that adopt her realize that dogs are work - and they're a lifelong commitment. I pray that she never suffers at human hands again.
