Potter is a 4 month old male Pit Bull Terrier Puppy. This is a sweet, very people-friendly puppy that loves attention - from anything - humans, animals, cats, other dogs, plants... if it looks at him, he loves it.

Potter has deformity of his front leg but is able to walk and jump about.  Within minutes of being rescued from the shelter, he was at the vet's getting exams and x-rays. Dogs have two bones in their lower legs (just like us!) Potters radius didn't grow the way it was supposed to. His growth plate kind of got "jammed" and was unable to grow anymore. His radius kept growing and turned his leg all the way around backwards. He can run and jump and play, but not for much longer. As the growth plates close and the leg becomes more and more deformed it will cause pain, limping and arthritis.

We could attempt to fix his leg - causing multiple surgeries, great expense and strain on little Potter. He wouldn't be able to romp or play for months. Each time they went it they would have to cut out a piece of bone and insert a pin and screw device. The screws would have to be turned a little everyday to put pressure on the bones and help straighten them . Potter would be in almost constant discomfort.

At the end, we could hope that it worked and his leg would be straight and functional. There would be no guarantees. It didn't seem fair to make Potter go through all the pain and misery and miss his entire puppy hood.

The vet recommended amputation. It will only take one surgery (and he'll get neutered at the same time). Being as young and happy and bouncy as he is, we expect Potter to recover 100% in no time.

It is sad for him to lose his leg, but when put side by side is is the more humane option.
