UPDATE

January 20, 2009

Merrick is a love . . . he is the sweetest welsh ever and he seems so appreciative of all the love he is getting smothered with.  While I can tell he is aprehensive that he might not stay (because he has had so many homes), every day that passes he will feel more secure and at home.  He is eating great and just wants to follow us around . . .he was awesome in the car for the long drive home.  I'll send you some pics soon for your "success" stories.  Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt him - I feel somewhat like it was destiny that we found each other (especially because I've waited 3 years since my last dog).  I'm so happy to provide him with a loving and happy home for him.  Thanks for all that you do, and by the way, Becky is a gem (but you already know that).    Warmest regards, Leslie Rogers

Merrick is approximately 1 year old. He was purchased from a pet store by people that had no business having any dog, much less a Welsh Terrier. They didn't train him, neuter him or house break him. Instead, they gave him to a different family when he was about 7 months old.

The 2nd family was also not familiar with terriers and not an appropriate home. The didn't train him, never got him groomed, never took him to a vet and never socialized him.

The second family was looking to re-home Merrick again when Boxers and Buddies stepped in. We couldn't bear to see this dog ruined through neglect. We knew that through us Merrick would find an appropriate home.

Merrick is now social, although still a terrier and VERY bossy around other dogs. His housebreaking is still sketchy but he is crate trained and has all his vaccinations. He will be neutered before placement.

He's a typical Welsh -

Being a terrier means he has strong chasing instincts and will chase small animals and maybe some cats.

If you're unfamiliar with Welsh Terriers, please research them prior to filling out an application for Merrick.

Here is a quick synopsis:

If you want a dog who...

-Looks like a small Airedale
-Is dynamic, sturdy, and tough -- not a delicate lapdog
-Makes a keen watchdog
-Is boisterous or argumentative with other dogs
-Doesn't shed too much

A Welsh Terrier may be right for you.

If you don't want to deal with...

-The dynamic terrier temperament (see full description below)
-Providing enough exercise and activities to keep them busy
-Aggression toward other animals -- chasing instincts
-Stubbornness
-Digging holes
-Barking
-Regular brushing and clipping

A Welsh Terrier may not be right for you.

The dynamic terrier temperament. Most terrier breeds are remarkably similar. The same words are used over and over -- quick to bark, quick to chase, lively, bossy, feisty, scrappy, clever, independent, stubborn, persistent, impulsive, intense.

If you're looking for a calmer dog that will be more of a family companion, please consider Elmo, Burt, Grover or Oscar.

if you love them you'll love him. He's definitely a character. We ask a $200 donation for all of our adult dogs. We require an application (found at www.boxersandbuddies.com), a home check, and a meet and greet before any adoption.
